The Problem
Nearly 50% of head impacts occur to the facemask and the NFL reported more than 40% of concussions resulted from facemask impacts. Not surprising when coaches teach athletes to tackle “head up” so they can “see what you hit” to prevent neck injuries. While helmets are tested rigorously, digging past the headlines and into the details, helmet tests reveal facemask impacts are where helmets traditionally underperform.

Using high-speed video and biomechanical research techniques, SoftShox scientists and engineers observed the chinstrap being pulled on during facemask impacts. SoftShox engineers developed a chinstrap equipped with its SoftShox liquid hydraulic pads, at the base of the chin, to absorb the force of the impact before it reaches the head.
